We've put together some commonly asked questions to give you more information about the Sugar Nursery and what we offer.

HOW DO I PLACE AN ORDER?

It's easy! Simply head over to the order page and fill out the form. We'll respond to your request within 48 hours to confirm our availability.

I NEED MACARONS TODAY. CAN I PLACE AN ORDER?

Unfortunately, we aren’t setup for daily orders. We create and bake once we confirm your order so that it is fresh and all the details are exactly as you specified – unless you asked us to use our creative judgement, which we love to do!

WHEN SHOULD I PLACE AN ORDER?

To avoid disappointment, major milestone and wedding orders are best placed 6 months in advance.  Many orders (cakes and sweet tables) are placed 8 – 12 months in advance. We don’t want anyone to be disappointed, so please book early.

HOW DOES PAYMENT WORK?

Invoices can be paid via credit card or bank transfer. A non-refundable 50% deposit is required to confirm your order and the remaining balance is due 14 days prior to delivery for standard orders and 28 days prior to delivery for wedding orders. If you are ordering within a 14 day window, we ask that you pay in full to confirm your order. Please see our Terms & Conditions for details.

HOW MUCH DOES A CUSTOM CAKE COST?

We specialize in tiered cakes, with pricing that starts with a two tiered cake at $425. We have created cakes as tall as 9 tiers so our price range has something for everyone.  All of this information is provided in our digital wedding cake brochure. 

WHAT SIZE CAKE DO I NEED?

It all depends on how much cake you’d like to serve. Our servings for weddings are 1″ by 1″ by 4″ tall. Servings of this size often work best for a multi-course meal and provide some flexibility in numbers if not everyone has a sweet tooth. Since the servings are small, we would advise choosing a cake that is close to your guest count, as some venues will cut larger slices. You can always add cutting cakes and cupcakes to your order to make up the difference.

DO YOU DELIVER?

Yes! Our deliveries are pre-arranged when you order. Cakes are chilled to help with transportation and will come to room temperature on location. Our cakes are at their best when at room temperature as their flavours will be full and delicious at that time. Depending on the sweet and our client’s preference, we also offer convenient pick up locations. Again, this organized at the time of order.

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?

We are currently an online home-based bakery located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Our bakers are Food Safe Certified (Amanda and Maddy) and our cake studio meets the highest standard for safety and cleanliness. While we prefer to deliver your precious sweets directly to your venue or home, we can always meet a mutually convenient location that meets your needs. We do not offer pickup at our location.

I HAVE MY OWN CAKE TOPPER. CAN YOU ADD IT TO THE CAKE?

Absolutely! Please let us know and we can coordinate the design to accommodate the cake topper. Have the cake topper ready at the venue and we’ll place it on your cake for you.

I WANT THE FLORALS ON MY CAKE TO MATCH MY BOUQUET. WILL YOU WORK WITH MY FLORIST?

While many flowers are technically edible, they do not perform well with a thorough wash and we cannot guarantee that your sweets will remain safe for consumption with the addition of traditional flowers. Aside from food safe dowels that we use for structure support, our goal is for your cake to be 100% edible. Sugar flowers, wafer paper designs, royal and buttercream icing are just some of the techniques we use to create beautiful, food safe, flowers on cakes.

WILL AN ALL BUTTERCREAM CAKE HOLD ITS SHAPE FOR THE DURATION OF MY EVENT?

All cakes will lose their shape in high temperatures and direct sunlight. Once we have discussed the ideal placement for your cake, we will work with you on design.  Buttercream cakes will certainly maintain their shape if cared for correctly. Whether our cake has a thin layer of fondant or is coated in buttercream, we will ensure it moves safely from our care to your event and is created to be on display for served safely for 4 – 6 hours.

WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR INGREDIENTS AND PACKAGING?

We are committed to using the highest quality products and ingredients in our bakery. Our ingredients are locally-sourced, farm-fresh and fair-practice preferred wherever possible. This extends to our packaging and our ingredients and how we manage waste. We prefer quality over price and our careful to ensure your sweets are delicious, beautifully designed and responsibly packaged.

DO YOU HAVE GLUTEN-FREE OR DAIRY-FREE OPTIONS?

Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate for gluten, dairy, or, nut allergies as we are not 100% able to avoid cross-contamination and always want to ensure the safety of our customers. We can make recommendations to other cake designers who may have capacity for gluten-free or dairy-free sweets.   

DO YOU LIST THE ALLERGENS IN YOUR PRODUCTS?

When you are placing an order, please indicate any allergens and we will let you know if we can create your sweets as required. Our kitchen is not nut free and does use dairy, eggs and gluten-based products. We will work with you to fully disclose our process and ingredients throughout the ordering process.
